Today, we shine a light on the SMEs-the Hustlers and Innovaters!

As the world outside grapples with wars and political upheavals, Kampala stands unrelenting, proud and tall. Our team set out to explore the vibrant cottage industries, where men and women proudly identify themselves as “Mama Mboga” or “Hustlers.” For those unfamiliar with the term, a hustler is someone who makes ends meet through sheer determination, creativity, and an unyielding entrepreneurial spirit.

These individuals are not just surviving; they are thriving against all odds through their innovation in the cottage industry.

Among the many stalls, we stumbled upon a group of craftsmen transforming leather into exquisite handiwork.

The art of pure leather, folks!

They showcased an impressive range of products, from bags to wallets and shoes. What truly captivated the crowd was their unique selling proposition: using a gas lighter to heat the leather without damaging it. The audience watched in awe, holding their breath with each demonstration—a true testament to craftsmanship.

In a humorous twist, one of our media members couldn’t resist purchasing a wallet, vowing to test its durability on a charcoal stove known locally as a “sigiri.” She has our best wishes.
May the next award-winning science prize bear her name.

Not far from this stall, a talented woman displayed beautifully embroidered kitenges and pure leather sandals.

While she opted not to demonstrate her products with fire (smart move!), her craftsmanship spoke volumes. Cottage industries from India, Tanzania, and Egypt also made compelling cases for their products. Didn’t UMA leadership say we have Exhbitors from over 31 countries? Each vendor showcased a blend of innovation, quality, and unique marketing strategies designed to woo buyers in this competitive space.

Even herbalists!

Amidst this bustling marketplace were herbal medicine vendors claiming to cure everything from headaches to male impotence. Interestingly, every buyer we approached for their opinion on these remedies seemed to vanish faster than you could say “discretion.”

As the sun set on day five of the trade fair, we were inspired by the creativity and resilience displayed by all participants. From Rentier Impressions’ intricate carvings adorned with motivational messages to Namuwanje Crafts and Milly Crafts leaving a strong brand trail with high-quality items.

In closing, while global uncertainties loom large, events like this trade fair remind us that innovation and entrepreneurship can flourish even in challenging times. May each day break with infinite dreams and possibilities!
