Uganda to Host the 13th African Potato Association Conference

In a move to propel the growing global movement for potatoes , Uganda  is set to host the 13th Triennial African Potato Association (APA) Conference, scheduled for May 25–30, 2025, at the Speke Resort Hotel in Munyonyo. 

This year’s theme, “Fostering Climate-Smart Cropping Systems for Sustainable Potato and Sweet potato Value Chains,” couldn’t be timelier these crops are nutritional powerhouses, economic drivers, and climate-resilient heroes that hold the potential to transform Africa’s food systems. Potato, the third most important food crop after rice and wheat, is globally consumed by over a billion people. According to The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) statistics

A unique aspect of the conference is its focus on practical solutions and collaboration. It’s not just another academic gathering; it’s a call to action for researchers, policymakers, industry players, and development practitioners to come together and tackle some of the most pressing issues in agriculture today.

From developing superior crop varieties to improving seed systems through public-private partnerships, the conference will delve into topics that directly impact farmers’ productivity and incomes. It will also address critical issues like pest and disease management in the face of climate change and how to better link production systems to market opportunities. These discussions have real implications for millions of farmers across Africa.—the conference highlights a path forward that prioritizes sustainability without compromising on productivity.

Africa’s potato production is about 29.92 million metric tons. Nigeria leads with 58%, followed by Algeria and Egypt. Egypt produced 213,272 metric tons in 2022, while Algeria produced 130,396 metric tons. South Africa contributed 52,157 metric tons, with an average yield of 15,368.50 kg/ha.  Potato production in Africa can be increased by 140%:  this is according to the International Potato Center

Despite the growing figures and the immense potential that  agriculture holds  , the world currently is  grappling  with the twin challenges of climate change and food insecurity and  as such Africa stands at a critical crossroads. The continent’s agricultural sector, the backbone of its economy and livelihoods, is under increasing pressure to adapt to changing climates while feeding a growing population.   A solution seems to be coming from a known source the “Triennial African Potato Association (APA) Conference”

The conference offers   a chance to build networks and build ecosystems that can drive lasting change. Researchers will have an opportunity to  connect with policymakers to influence agricultural policies. Industry stakeholders will also  explore partnerships that make high-quality seeds more accessible. While development practitioners can share insights on scaling up successful interventions.

In a nut shell, the APA Conference is resilience, innovation, and collaboration in the face of global challenges. It’s about tapping  into Africa its  talent, resources, and capability to lead the way in sustainable agriculture. The deadline for abstract submissions is April 20, 2025
